Is It A Good Deal?
Unfortunately this is another case where Aldi’s product info is a little lacking. It tells us that it includes 8 raclette pans but does not say if the grill can use all 8 at once or if it only has space for 4. It does not give dimensions either.
If this Raclette grill has space for 8 raclette pans to cook at once it is probably a pretty good deal. If it can only cook four pans at once I think you can find cheaper alternatives for the price.
How To Prepare Raclette
Raclette is traditionally served with boiled potatoes, pickles, bread, vegetables, or charcuterie (various meats). The dish is in essence melted cheese poured onto a plate or onto other foods. Traditionally this was done by heating a large chunk of cheese next to a fire and scrapping the melted part off onto a plate.
Modern Raclette is often cooked at the table in a Raclette Grill like this. Most often slices of cheese are used instead of blocks of cheese. While the dish traditionally uses raclette cheese this can be hard to find in the US so you may want to try an alternative.
If you aren’t using raclette cheese you will want to go with a creamy cheese that melts easily and has a mild flavour.
Any cheese that melts easily could be used for raclette but it is best if they have a mild flavor, creamy texture, and nutty flavour.
Some good options are Brie, Gruyere, Gouda, Swiss, Fontina, Cheddar, Jarlsberg, Appenzeller, or Emmental.
In general you want to go with a younger cheese for a milder flavor. Aged cheeses will generally have a stronger flavor.
Traditionally Raclette Cheese is served over boiled potatoes and pickles (cucumber and onion). Other good options would be bread, charcuterie, vegetables, olives, grilled meats, or even fruits. You can be creative with the meal and use anything that would pair well with the cheese you are using.
Traditionally raclette is served with a hot black or herbal tea to help with digestion or a wine that pairs well with cheese. I think a nice beer would go well with it as well.
