Aldi Find Mushroom Grow Kit
Aldi may not have gourmet mushrooms in the produce section but this week’s Aldi Find let’s you grow your own. The Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Kit will be available the week of 6/1/2022 for $14.99. This mushroom grow kit will let you grow Pearl Oyster Mushrooms at home with minimal effort in about 10 days.
This kit is a great activity for kids to see how mushrooms grow and includes learning materials. The same week Aldi will also have Back to the Roots Kids Grow Kits for Watermelon and Sunflowers for $4.99 each and a Kids Grow Kit Terrarium for $9.99. The Terrarium Kit looks like it could be a good activity for kids. If you are interested in the Watermelon or Sunflower Kits you are probably better off buying a pack of watermelon or sunflower seeds and some peat pots. You would probably plant a whole garden of sunflowers or watermelon for that $5 if you buy from a local garden center. You would miss out on the learning/activity guides, but I am sure there are some available for free online.
I tried one of the Back to the Roots Mushroom kits last year (same brand, from a different store) and had good results. The first growth of mushrooms took about 10 days and gave enough for a meal for two. I also got a second smaller growth of mushrooms after the first harvest. Later I added the growth material to wood chips and was able to get a few more mushrooms.

Is it a good deal?
This Aldi Find will sell for $14.99 per kit and it looks like a pretty good deal. Most other retail stores and seem to be selling it for around $18-$20 or are selling a mini kit for around $13. If you are just looking for the learning experience the mini kit may be better for saving a few bucks but you will get fewer mushrooms to eat. If you are really looking for getting a lot of mushrooms you can get a larger mushroom grow kit meant for producing more mushrooms.
