Aldi Sushi Rolls

A few times a year Aldi has frozen sushi rolls available but they generally don’t stick around to long. The brand is Fusia (Fusia Asian Inspirations) which is Aldi’s Asian food brand. Generally Aldi will have a bunch of Asian style foods (dumplings, soups, noodles, ect) come out at the same time with a good portion being in the Fusia brand. This year (2022) Aldi released a lot of Asian foods in the second week of February.

This is a super easy no-cook, no-prep meal that you can bring along to work or just have an easy meal. I have tried this in the past and they were decent, they are not going to compete with your average sushi restaurant but for an quick easy meal to have in your freezer they are good.

How to Prepare Aldi’s Sushi From Frozen

These instructions are from the coconut shrimp tempura roll but it is likely the same for other frozen sushi rolls at Aldi. Check the back of your box for specific instructions.

Microwave: Place 4-6 pieces on a plate and microwave (on high) for 20 seconds, flip them over and microwave another 20 seconds. If they are still partially frozen continue microwaving in 15 second increments. They are done when the center is tender to the touch and the rice is slightly warm. This is the quickest method but it is the one that is most likely to mess up your sushi by over cooking.

Thaw at Room Temp: Place as many pieces as you want onto a plate and cover. Leave them out at room temp for about 2 hours.

Thaw in a Water Bath: Submerge the still sealed tray in cold water for 30 minutes. This is faster than room temp and avoids potential overcooking with the microwave but you need to do it with a sealed tray or put it in an airtight ziplock type bag.

Do not thaw in the refrigerator: Thawing in the fridge will dry out the rice.

Eat your sushi soon after thawing for best quality.
